Drought Feeding of Sheep

چکیده

Drought may be regarded as an extended period of nutritional deficiency, that is a period during which the rate of production of feed is less than its rate of consumption. During the past century, eight major and many minor droughts have had striking effects on the Australian sheep industry (Foley 1957). These effects, some obvious, some less obvious may be summarised as follows: (a) Reduction in stock numbers. (b) Reduction in the amount and quality of wool produced. (c) Delays in mating and hence lower reproduction rate. (d) Long term effects on feed production. (e) Prolonged post-drought effects on growth, production and reproduction. (f) Decline in the rate of increase in productivity, i.e., decline in the rate of increase of the ewe flock (Bishop 1964).

Metabolizable Energy in Feeding Systems for Grazing Animals in Australia

Attention is drawn to several comparisons of the ARC feeding system with other systems. Recent Australian adaptations of ME standards for drought feeding of sheep and for cattle feeding are described. There is a need to adapt any feeding standards to the biology of the pastoral system. It is concluded that the Australia-wide adoption of ME based feeding standards would be helpful in promoting a...

Comparison of feeding value of a treated sea plant, Posidonia australis, with lucerne, pasture and wheat

An experiment was carried out to compare the effect of feeding posidonia australis as a non-conventional feedstuff with cereal straw for sheep maintenance; and to compare seagrass/chicken litter with lucerne hay and pasture for sheep production on a scale such as would be applicable to lot-feeding of sheep in the area of suthern Australia in case of short term feed scarcity. To approach this ta...

The Value of Cottonseed Alone and with Wheat in Drought Feeding of Sheep

Ten non pregnant, non lactating Corriedale ewes ate an average of 148 g fuzzy whole cotton seed per sheep per day and their mean weight fell from 40.3 to 32.2 kg over an eight week period. Two of the sheep died. A similar group of ewes, offered a mixture of 227 g of cottonseed and 227 g of wheat per sheep per day, usually ate all the ration. At the end of an 18 week period, there were no signif...
